The rain had been relentless since evening. Thick clouds had swallowed the sky, and the highway stretched ahead like a lonely ribbon disappearing into the storm. I had just finished a hectic day at the hospital and was driving home when my car suddenly coughed, shuddered, and came to a halt.

I tried the ignition again.

Nothing.

With a sigh, I called the mechanic.

"Half an hour, sir," he assured me.

With no other choice, I stepped out of the car and stood beneath an old banyan tree. The smell of wet earth filled the air, and the rain drummed endlessly on the road. I had never liked getting caught in the rain.

Then I heard laughter.

A young girl stood in the rain, completely drenched. She wasn't trying to escape it; she was celebrating it. I looked away.

Then looked again.

I told myself I was only passing time while waiting for the mechanic.

But my eyes kept searching for her.

She smiled.

He laughed.

"Then perhaps she was just a fairy passing through the rain."

Perhaps he was right.

Gradually, life became busier than memories.

The rain still fell every monsoon, but I no longer stopped my car.

I wrote down a few notes and asked for some investigations.

Before leaving, she paused.

"Doctor... have we met somewhere before?"

My heart skipped a beat.

"I was wondering the same thing."

She smiled faintly.

"You seem familiar."

Before I could answer, the nurse called her for the tests.

The next day, her reports arrived.

I opened them with the confidence of a doctor who had read thousands before.

Blood reports.

CT scan.

Biopsy.

Then my eyes stopped.

Malignant carcinoma.

For the first time in my career, the words refused to stay on the paper. They pierced straight through my heart.

I removed my glasses and closed my eyes.

How could fate be so cruel?

The nurse informed me that she had arrived.

She entered quietly and sat across from me.

"Doctor... what do the reports say?"

I remained silent for a moment.

Then I looked at her.

"Tell me something."

She looked surprised.

"Do you still like the rain?"

A gentle smile appeared on her lips.

"I love it."

She laughed softly.

"My mother still scolds me for getting drenched."

The room fell silent.

"I remember one rainy evening," she continued. "A man's car had broken down. He stood under a tree pretending not to look at me."

I stared at her.

"You remember?"

"I remembered the eyes," she whispered. "I never forgot them."

For the first time in years, I smiled without fear.

Outside, rain began to fall against the hospital windows.

I finally reached across the table and held her trembling hand.

"Yes," I said quietly. "I remember that evening too."

She searched my face.

Then, with tears gathering in her eyes, she whispered,

"So... am I going to die?"

I tightened my grip on her hand.

"As your doctor, I cannot promise miracles."

I paused.

"But as the man who has carried your smile in his heart since that rainy evening, I can promise you this..."

She lowered her head, and a tear rolled down her cheek.

Outside, the rain washed the city once again.
