Their meeting wasn’t a romantic one. They didn’t meet in rain, drenched from crown to heel. Neither they bumped into one another creating a romantic scenario as in movies. Their meeting was as nonchalant as they come. As less romantic as possible. As dull as it can be. They just met as classmates.

When Divyam entered the college first time, the very thought coursing through his mind was - I ain’t here for love. Flirting is all I care about.

St. Convent International College was a fully hostel college. And that was the greatest thing for him. Girls and Boys hostel in the same campus. What can be more fun! Especially since he was doing BBA- what was there really to study!.

Little did he know what fate’d planned for him.

The first day of class, the first lecture and the first thing he did upon entering the class was scanning all the students in the class. Well, to put it accurately, all the girls in the class. Few moments in the class and his mind was already working on all the angles possible. Some more sexist than the last one. Maybe some of body-shaming too.

Ah... she is damn hot. She is black beauty. That one has great figure though can’t say the same for her face.

In just a few seconds while going to his preferred bench, which was of course the last one, he’d gotten a pretty good idea about nearly every girl.

“Hey. I’m Divyam”.

“Agnish”

They both shook hands.

“So where are you from?” Divyam asked.

“Durgapur. What ‘bout you?”

“I’m from Delhi only. Gandhinagar”

“Oh. Have heard it has pretty good market for clothes” Agnish inquired with interest. After all, he had a keen interest in clothes. The kind of clothes you wear is gonna decide the kind of person you’re gonna be – this was what he always used to say and believe in.

“Yeah. It has”

And soon their conversation routed to what any two students talk about. Teachers were introducing themselves along with an intro from all the students. But they were just busy on the last bench talking about stuffs like gadgets, complaining about the college and faculty members (maybe it comes inbuilt in every student’s gene), songs, movies (every type of course), ex-gf’s, and finally where every conversation leads to in the end- girls.

“Do you know her?” Divyam asked him, pointing to a girl in navy blue top and faded blue jeans looking absolutely gorgeous. He was hoping to get a positive answer as hostel life is small where news and friendship travels pretty quick.

“No. But I’ve heard that she has a boyfriend.”

“What?” Divyam said a little too loud to get attention of all other students around him. He continued in a low voice “Not even a week has passed since we arrived, and she has already gotten a boyfriend?”

“No. I’ve heard that they are in a relationship for a long time”.

Damn it.

Divyam was good looking. Broad face. Fair skinned. A beautiful smile. Medium height.

Agnish was also good looking with fair skin but a couple inches taller than Divyam, giving him edge over Divyam. Though not a beautiful smile but he had a charming vibe.

“Do you like her?” Agnish asked with a teasing smile.

“Of course not. Why’d I like her? She isn’t really my type.”

“Do you like someone?” Divyam asked.

“No. Liking someone is more like infatuation. I prefer love. It takes time but it gives us both satisfaction and happiness”

“So you’re a lover boy.” Now it was Divyam’s chance to make fun. He said laughing. “I’ve got a Romeo as my friend.”

“Well, that’s one way of putting it.”

While they were enjoying between them, girls in their adjacent column were also busy talking. Talking about clothes, shoes, hair style, nail polish(finding immense pleasure in talking about these things) and of course... Boys.

Look at him. See how he is watching us. Asshole.

Haven’t they ever before seen any beautiful girl before?

Fucking pervert.

That son of a bitch was stalling me in the park.

If words could kill, boys would have become history.

Lunchtime was close to end. Students were coming to their respective classes. Divyam was roaming aimlessly in the class when a girl from his adjacent column came to him.

“Do you know what the next lectures are?” she asked.

The moment he saw her, he was stoned. Those beautiful brown eyes on a fair round face. Thin red lips. Her open brown hairs spread on her shoulders.

“I... I have no idea.” he said with his heartbeat at twice its usual rate. Seeing her beauty at such a close distance was something he wasn’t prepared for.

She sighed.

Time was passing very slowly for him. It was as if he had the whole world’s time to just gaze at her and gaze and gaze. A beauty as rare as a diamond in the hand of a homeless person. A face as beautiful as a full moon in a cloudless sky. Eyes even deeper than the very depth of an ocean. Lips worthy to make even the roses ashamed.

She turned back and was about to go to her seat when Divyam stopped her.

“Hey”, he said in a little high voice so that she wouldn’t miss to hear him.

She turned back towards him.

“You didn’t tell me your name,” he said smiling.

“Oh,” she said smiling too “Medha. And yours?”

“Divyam”

And even before he realised, it’d already started.

“You are an idiot. She doesn’t feel the same way. And c’mon she isn’t that beautiful.” Agnish said sipping coke in the cafeteria.

“Shut up. She is one of the most beautiful I have ever met. Her eyes, her nose, her lips- they’re just... perfect. And you bet she does feel the same way. I’ve seen her staring at me several times. And when I caught her watching me, she just looked away as if to hide her crime. That says something, doesn’t it?” Divyam said desperately as if any thought of her not liking him was beyond comprehension. Or maybe it was a little because of his fear that all this was for nothing; that it was all a silly mistake and he was mistaken in even conceiving that she liked him.

Agnish started laughing.

“You know what. You are in love, my friend,” he said still laughing.

Divyam reddened on hearing it. Love? He didn’t want it. It comprised too much heartache and too little happiness. It was a Pandora box better left unopened.

“Don’t laugh,” Divyam said embarrassed, “I’m just checking my chances over her. That’s all. It’s just a fling. Nothing more.”

I don’t love her, do I?

Agnish stared him as if trying to read him and his real feelings.

“What?” Divyam asked, finding Agnish’s more-than-usual attention on him a little awkward.

“Nothing.” Agnish said casually with a grin on his face. Divyam knew that grin. It usually came when Agnish knew something which Divyam didn’t.

“What about you? Don’t you like any girl from our class?”Divyam asked to shift the heat from him to Agnish.

“They are all bunch of idiots. Not a single one good enough to fall in love with,” Agnish said.

Arrogant.

“Except her,” Divyam said.

Agnish smiled and said – “Including her”

“Go to hell”

Divyam was lying on his bed. He could feel his heart going after Medha. He tried to stop it, but heart has a way to get what it wants. He feared falling in love with Medha. He feared that the end might be like the last time- Tragic.

An image from his past came into his memory. A beautiful face with dark brown eyes, raven black hair, red lips and a lovely but small nose.. And then came her gorgeous smile, overwhelming him. He tried, in vain, not to cry.

Why am I crying for someone for whom I was nobody?

He had never discussed that incident to Agnish. Neither Divyam wanted to tell, nor Agnish needed to know that. He kept those memories buried inside him. Some nights, just like this night, those memories resurfaced to torment him. To haunt him.

But there was a bigger problem now- Medha. Divyam hadn’t admitted his feelings towards her but Agnish knew how Divyam felt towards her. How much he liked her. How much he cared about her.

Half a month ago, he had never fathomed himself in this situation. He had become friends with Medha. Just friends. But he knew that even in lectures, she watched him. And he knew that there was love in those eyes. He could feel it.

Yet, he hadn’t hit on her yet. He feared falling in love again. But the problem was – he’d already fallen in love.

“Okay. I admit I love her.” Divyam said.

“I knew it,” Agnish shouted as if he had just won a million dollar lottery. All eyes in the cafeteria turned towards the sudden commotion.

“Sorry,” Agnish murmured feeling embarrassed, “My suggestion- tell her.”

“Agnish, I don’t have any problem in telling her. What I fear is the future. Let’s assume she feels the same. Now, What if she’d just dump me after some time? What if she’d breakup with me when I am madly in love with her? What am I gonna do then? What if-”

“Please don’t tell me that you’ve philophobia because these stupid questions indicate just that,” Agnish said cutting Divyam in between.

Divyam saw Agnish straight in his eyes and fell silent. It was an ‘unspoken reply’ for Agnish.

“So, you do fear love,” Agnish sighed, “I could never have guessed this about you.”

Divyam kept the silence. Agnish didn’t speak too. Events had come to an unexpected turn.

“Why?” Agnish asked, finally breaking the silence. He wanted to know the reason of why a man would fear love. Why would someone fear an emotion which is the hinge on which our lives hang? What does a life count for if there is no love in it?

“It was in the first week of July that I joined my physics tuition. There wasn’t any beautiful single girl at that time. At least not beautiful to me. And then after 3-4 days, Aparajita came.”

Divyam looked at Agnish’s face and finding his undivided attention, he continued.

“In beginning, my mind told me that it was just an infatuation. But at that time, my mind and heart were thinking differently.”

Agnish cut in between.

“How did she look?”

Agnish’s curiosity brought smile to Divyam’s face.

“Diva. Her hair were black. Lips were more beautiful and soft than any rose petal i’ve ever seen. Her smile could bring instant happiness even to a depressed soul. Her eyes... well, it were so beautiful that you could’t resist keep looking at them. Trust me, I haven’t seen more beautiful pair of eyes than those brown ones.

“Though her nose was a little small, but it was perfect. It had its beauty in its own way. In short, she was what a heart desires.”

“I never thought you to be falling for just the face.” Agnish said.

“She had a great figure too. But believe me or not, I never gave a shit about that. I loved her. It was...,” Divyam paused, looked into Agnish’s eyes.” ... love at first sight. The moment I saw her- I knew that I wanted her. I needed her. It was like my soul recognized her from somewhere else. As if it knew that she was the one who could complete me. She and only she.”

There was some seriousness in his tone which Agnish had rarely seen.

“All right. What happened then?”

“A week passed. Two weeks. One month. At that time, my feelings for her had reached such a height that the first thing I used to think about upon waking up was her. The person I used to sleep while thinking of was her. Yet, I didn’t have enough guts to propose her.

“And then one day, after nearly one month of my silent love, I knew that I have to tell her now. I had done enough silent love for my whole life. That day,” Divyam said smiling, “I proposed her.”

“Hold on a second,” Agnish said cutting his rhythm, “How did you propose her? I mean did you kneel down or did you just---”

“That’s none of your fucking business.”, Divyam said, giving Agnish no chance to complete his query.

Agnish started laughing at his reply. Divyam gave him an I-am-gonna-cut-your-balls look.

“I’m sorry. Continue.” Agnish said and started drinking water from the disposable glass.

“She rejected me,”

Agnish couldn’t control his laughter any more. He started laughing as if he had just heard the best joke. He spit water on the table because of his laughing. It was the scene which none in the canteen missed. Agnish came back to normal after few seconds and after apologizing asked him to continue.

“She rejected me at first. But then she came to me two days later,” Divyam paused and smiled, “and accepted my proposal.”

“Fuck, man. You were planning your future home! What was next-- your children’s name?” Agnish asked after hearing about their together-moments.

“I have told you that it was my first love. And more than that-- she was my true love.”

“So what? It’s... ridiculous.”

“Do you want to hear or not?”

Agnish gestured by moving his hand, signalling Divyam to carry on.

“As I said, I really loved her. The thought of losing her, didn’t ever cross my mind. I never thought that we would ever have to go our separate ways.

“And yes, maybe we would have started thinking about our children’s name, if time were in my aide. But you see, time is my greatest foe. A relative of hers saw us smooching in an alley of the mall. Don’t see me like that... It was empty. I have no idea how the fuck he saw us.”

Divyam took a sip of water and continued.

“I don’t know what happened at her home. She started ignoring me. Upon asking her what happened, she told me never to talk with her again. Never to call her. Never to wait for her after tuition. Never to contact her. What she wanted to say was to forget that she ever existed in my fucked-up life.”

Agnish saw the cheerful Divyam disappearing. His tone had become serious on recalling those harsh and painful memories.

“You don’t seem like a guy to lose easily,” Agnish asked knowing him a hard tough shell to break.

“I didn’t. She was my love,” Divyam took his hand to his heart instinctively before bringing it back to the table, “and I wasn’t going to lose her so easily. I tried to contact her in class but she would just cross by me, as if I were a no one. I wrote a letter that night. All my feelings, all those fond memories of us were there. My whole feelings were written on those 2 sheets of paper.

“Next day, I was gonna give that letter to her. Knowing that she was an early comer, I went early too. That day, she didn’t come. The same happened for 2 days. Upon asking, I came to know that she had left the tuition.”

“What happened with the letter?” Agnish asked.

“I gave it to one of our mutual friend-Palak, to deliver it to her. Next day, she said - ‘Aparajita tore that letter even without reading it. She also asked you to forget her as she doesn’t feel the same way as you do. She also told me to tell you not to bother her again.’ On hearing that, I just kept looking on her face-- lost in my own world. I couldn’t come to believe what she had just said. Seeing me like that she said- ‘Don’t you understand that you were just a fling for her?’.”

“So, did you try to contact her after that?”

“Of course I did. But she had even changed her phone number. Then I tried on facebook. Well... She blocked me there too, leaving me with no way to contact her.” Divyam said, lost in some memories. Past memories.

Agnish looked at his face and found Divyam’s eyes moistened up.

“Bitch”, Agnish murmured loudly enough for Divyam to hear.

“The day she blocked me on facebook, I knew that I have lost her. She wasn’t just my girlfriend, she was my love. My true love. You won’t believe me, but that day I wanted to die. I just couldn’t fathom a life without her. She didn’t take a part of me Agnish, she took the whole me. I wanted to end my life which had already become devoid of her.”

“This dying thing seems more like madness to me.” Agnish said.

“Call it what you like, Agnish. But remember one thing. There isn’t any love in this world without a bit of madness in it. And mine love was one hell of its type,” Divyam changed his posture to be in a more comfortable position, “Do you know what I prayed to god before proposing her? I asked him to take my life but not to give me life without her. Seems like he acquiesced my prayer in the first place and then took her when she had become my life. And in that way, he took my life, didn’t he?

“Anyway, a friend of mine, Manish told me to think straight. To think beyond her. He told me to think about myself and my family. That got me and I decided to carry on. But that day I decided one more thing—I’m not going to fall in love again. And here I am, once again in love.” Divyam concluded smiling.

“I still call it madness, man.”

Divyam grinned, showing his teeth.

“I call it love at extreme.”

“Stupidity, I call it.”

“From today, we are gonna watch if Medha really watches you,” Agnish said.

They were returning to their class after lunch time.

“Oh C’mon. I’ve already told you like hundred times that she watches me. I’ve seen her myself.”

“Your feelings are biased towards her so let me do the watching thing.”

Divyam sighed.

“Fine.”

“You need to get close to her and be more than just friends,” Agnish said on the way to hostel after their classes.

“But she watches me. And now even you’ve seen her watching me too. So why waste time when I can propose her?” Divyam asked quite impatiently.

“That isn’t a credulous idea at all. Know her first. Be close to her. Then propose her. That is the way with the girls. Impatience won’t lead you anywhere.”

After several minutes of brain storming with Agnish, Divyam finally agreed to approach her slowly.

He was taught 5 steps by Agnish in the back of a classmate notebook.

1- Be good friends.

2- Reach in her inner friend circle.

3- Roam as much as you can with her (to various places).

4- Propose her.

5- Do all the steps properly & as fast as possible

P.S.- Avoid friend zone by always treating her like ‘more than a friend’.

Divyam got to work from the very next day. In a month, he had become one of her close friends. And about roaming various places, well, Medha was more interested in visiting malls, MacDs, KFCs than places. All the same, he went with her everywhere. Everybody sensed that something was cooking up between them. But he didn’t give a thought upon that. He was with Medha- that was all he cared about.

In nearly two months, he had reached step 4. During this time, a few guys had proposed her but fortunately for Divyam, she rejected all of them.

“It’s time.” Agnish said, sitting in the cafeteria and eating his snacks.

Divyam nodded.

“Are you sure that she likes me?” Divyam asked nervously.

“Yes, pretty sure. First, her constant gaze upon you during the classes or anywhere. Then I have seen her smiling, when with you, like with no one else. Believe me, she is gonna accept your proposal.”

Just the words Divyam needed to hear. His face had become a little pale on the prospect of proposing her. He didn’t fear rejection but of losing her when they had become close friends.

As if reading Divyam’s thoughts, Agnish said, “If you don’t propose her now, you are gonna lose her anyway.”

Divyam looked at Agnish’s eyes and nodded. He rose from his chair. He had made his decision.

When he reached the classroom door, his heartbeat had spiked up. It was so fast; he thought everyone could hear it.

God, help me.

He swallowed his saliva, only to find his throat dry.

Maybe proposing her isn’t a good idea at all.

He wanted to run back to the cafeteria. Two months back, he wouldn’t have thought a second time before proposing her. But now it was different. He feared that the proposal might ruin their friendship.

He found himself roaming in the corridors rather than in the class. He knew that she would be in the class. The scariest part was that her friends would be there too.

He had gone through dozens of scenarios of proposing her in his mind. Yet, he couldn’t summon enough courage to tell her in real.

I’ve to do it. I’ve to do it.

He went through this mantra couple of times, inefficiently. And then he knew what to do. He entered the class with no thoughts running in his mind.

The trick was - don’t think. Just proceed.

She was alone, looking outside the window.

Luck is finally on my side.

He had waited a long time for true love. Now, he could smell it. He was just a step behind it. The very first moment he had laid his eyes upon her, he somehow knew that she was the one(just like the last time). The one who would teach him what love is all about. Though, he had no idea how.

A few other guys were there, busy in their own world.

He reached her.

“Medha,” Divyam said.

She turned back and smiled seeing him. There was a gleam in his eyes which he hadn’t seen before.

“I was waiting for you only. I have to tell you something.” she said seriously.

Holy Fuck. She is going to propose me.

They both got seated on the first bench. Then she began--

“I wanted to discuss this with you for a long time. I didn’t know how to say this so I kept it to myself. But now I think I need to.”

Same here, dear.

She looked straight into his eyes.

These brown eyes are gonna kill me.

“I love Agnish and I need your help. I.. ,”

What the... No it can’t be true. You can’t do this to me. I love you, not he. You heard me? I love you, not he.

She loved Agnish. She always watched Agnish, not him. And he thought himself as her choice, when it was Agnish all the time. He was just a ....

“ ... a friend,” she stopped.

“Are you listening?” she asked him. Her query brought him back to the reality. He had heard enough to know what the case was.

“Yes,” Divyam said forcing a smile on his face,” And of course I will help you. I’m your friend, right?”

Divyam and Agnish were sitting in the cafeteria. Neither of them had any appetite for food left. Nor any concern for the ongoing lecture. Both of them were sitting there- lost in their own thoughts. Agnish had his gears of mind working on different probabilities- thinking the best way to handle this situation.

“You need to tell her the truth.” Agnish said, finally breaking the silence. He couldn’t think of any better way than telling her the truth.

Divyam didn’t pay any head to what Agnish was saying. He was lost in his own thoughts. In his own pain.

“Are you even hearing me?” Agnish asked a little too loud sensing Divyam’s reverie. Divyam looked at his face.

“Yes. And I know exactly what to do.”

“And what’s that?” Agnish asked with his raised eyebrows sensing some absurd answer coming.

“I’m gonna do what she asked me to.”

Agnish thumped on the table and said, “Are you out of your fucking mind? You love her, not me,”

“What have you wanted since coming to this college, eh? A true love, don’t you? And now that there is someone who actually loves you, you are ignoring her. You are out of your mind Agnish, not me.”

Agnish hadn’t anticipated such an outburst by Divyam. He decided to handle this delicately.

“So you want me to so-called ‘find my love’ by killing yours. That’s fucking insane. You’re my best friend Divyam and I can’t do this to you knowing how much you love her.”

“Wait. Wait. Wait. You don’t understand. When she said that she loved you, I didn’t feel anything. It was just like hearing your friend’s guilty confession.Maybe I never loved her the way I thought. It was just attraction, believe me. She is my good friend and that’s why I want her to be happy. That’s all. You both will be a great couple, trust me.”

Agnish kept silent, thinking about what Divyam had just said.

“You’re still not talking sense.” Agnish said. He couldn’t understand what was wrong with his friend. One second he says that he loves her and the next second he calls it just an attraction.

“Look. You always wanted true love. And here it is, lying invitingly in front of you. Now it’s upon you to decide if you are capable of handling it or not. Don’t treat me as an excuse because I’ve already told you and am telling you again- I don’t love her. Had I loved her, I would have been sitting in solitude wiping off my tears,” Divyam stood up,” I don’t think hearing your excuses are worth the management lecture.”

Divyam went to the classroom, leaving Agnish behind-- lost in his own thoughts and dilemma.

Dear Diary,

It was a tough day. Not physically but mentally. And to face it I had to act even tougher. I had to fake my emotions. In front of lecturer, in front of my friends, in front of Medha. Moreover, in front of Agnish.

You know how much I love Medha, right? I don’t know how she managed to steal my heart in that first glimpse. Maybe her eyes’d that magic, maybe it was smile. Sometimes I think it’s the way she giggles or maybe it was her heart. Or maybe I was just meant to get hurt and hence she appeared- not just in front of my eyes but also in my heart and my dream. She was like Aparajita. And I lost her too. I wouldn’t have felt the same pain, if it had happened two months ago. But, you see, I always lose my love after coming too close to it. That’s my fate. How can I not fear love? You never say anything. But today I need you like never before. I’ve none to share my feelings with. None.

You must be thinking why I lied to Agnish. Why I told him that I didn’t feel anything when she said that she loved him, not me. Why I told him- ‘I don’t love her’. It’s because I found a secret, my friend. In those moments when she was saying something(which I can’t recall what it was), when I was on the way to cafeteria after that, when I was sitting in the cafeteria lost in my thoughts -- I understood what love is all about.

Love is about sacrifice. It isn’t about being with someone you desire. Neither it has anything to do with spending your life along with someone you like. It’s all about sacrifice. Sacrificing your happiness for someone you care a lot about. That’s the proper definition of love. It’s not about giving something and then getting something back. It’s just giving. It’s the most selfless act there can be.

She was that beautiful soul which I so much desired and yet couldn’t reach. Just like you see the moon and want that beauty in your hand and the moment you try to capture it, you get to know that it’s impossible. It’s just out of your reach. Just like the fragrance of flowers in the air- you can feel it but the moment you try to catch it, you will get disappointed knowing that you just can’t. It’s only meant to be felt. Just like wind. And just like her. But that’s what love is, my dear diary. Feel it and let it be. Don’t try to possess it as it’s not meant to be possessed.

If I’d told either Agnish or Medha the truth, their love life would never have started (It’s still not started. But it will- I know for sure). So I told them what was needed to be told. If I love her, i’ve to sacrifice for her. And that’s what I am doing. I’m ready to sacrifice my real feelings in front of them to show that I’m really glad to see them together. Not just that. I’m even ready to sacrifice a lot more if needed. I’m ready to sacrifice everything for her. That’s the price I’ve to pay for loving her- not just by my heart but by my soul too.

Now I’ve understood why god did this to me. He wanted me to know what love really is. He failed last time. But now he has succeeded by giving me the one who left me and the other who never chose me.

She was lying down on the bed with a 2-sheet paper in her hands. It had worn down from use. There were several blur spots on the paper as if water drops had fallen on it. But she knew what they really were. Something even more valuable than water.

Divyam didn’t know that she still possessed that letter. He only knew what she wanted him to know. She didn’t have enough courage to throw that priceless thing away. So she kept it -- reading it every day to relive those beautiful moments with Divyam. He thought that she had betrayed him-- that pained her the most. He had no idea how much she loved her. How much she still loved her. But fate wasn’t in their side. The memories of that night were still fresh. She wouldn’t ever forget that night.

Her father had come home pretty angry that night. She told him that both she and Divyam truly love each other. But he ignored that by calling it ‘a teenage idiocy’. He told her about his own teenage love with her mom which ended with her mom fleeing away with someone else just after her birth. He was the one who took all of her responsibilities upon himself. From changing her diapers to educating her in a prestigious school -- all was done by him alone. He wanted no more humiliation from the society than he had already got.

She had no words to say when he said- ‘I’m your dad and i can’t see you in pain. He will only give you pain and that pain will be thousand fold more than what you’re feeling right now. So it’s better to forget him.’ She knew how much her dad loved her. He eventually gave her a choice between him and Divyam. He wanted to know whom did she love more. Maybe it was the fear to part his daughter with someone else that made him to come to this conclusion. Whatever the reason might be, how could she have chosen Divyam over her dad? Now, she would have to live with that choice.

Her train of thoughts stopped by the sound of doorbell. Her father had come. She put that letter in her book and went to open the gate. Her dad was all that was left to her now. She could only hope that Divyam would come back into her life someday. Someday, when her dad would understand that her love for Divyam was real. Someday, when Divyam would understand why she had to lie. Given a single bridge between her and Divyam, she couldn’t have resisted the urge to talk to him. To meet him. That’s why she had to burn every bridge between them. She hoped that one day Divyam would understand that too. Her father had done much for her.
