About this book
This edition of the International Fire Code sets out rules meant to protect people and buildings from fire and explosion dangers. Its coverage spans everyday precautions, emergency planning and readiness, access routes for fire crews and water supply, sprinkler and fire alarm systems, specialized hazards, and how hazardous materials must be kept and handled.
The 2021 revision adds updated requirements for 3-D printing equipment and processes, covering both small-scale and industrial settings. Permanently installed artificial plants that are tall or placed on roofs or near buildings must now have their flame spread performance verified. Rules for emergency responder communication have been rewritten to account for systems that now go well beyond two-way radios and must perform better.
Sprinkler standards for businesses that store, make, or sell upholstered furniture and mattresses have been clarified and revised. Single-story self-storage buildings that open directly to the outdoors receive a new exemption. Open parking structures above a set fire area now need an automatic sprinkler system.
The code also expands its rules for energy storage systems, which now cover many more technologies and both building-integrated and standalone installations, with added requirements for commissioning and decommissioning. A new chapter addresses storing distilled spirits and wine in barrels and casks. The construction fire safety section has been reorganized and broadened, placing greater responsibility on property owners and requiring a site safety plan and a named site safety director.
