A Darker Magic

A brutal conflict has ended, and a shield of Martian magic now guards the stars. For two centuries, spell and steel have worked together to defend all of humanity. Two years ago, Lieutenant Commander Roslyn Chambers watched the last remnants of the Republic surrender. The secessionists who had waged war on the Protectorate of Mars were finally beaten, their rebellion fueled by atrocities committed against mages and ordinary people alike.

Now a special commission sent by the Mage-Queen of Mars takes Roslyn deep into the former Republic. Her task is to track down those responsible for that violence. Her targets include mages who turned against their own kind and the creators of Project Prometheus, who must face justice.

Yet even the Republic did not know that Prometheus had quietly joined magic and technology once more, working far from prying eyes. What they have built is a monster so dangerous that a Protectorate shaped by spellcraft itself calls it black magic.
