A Day's Work

Francisco is a young Mexican-American boy who finds it hard to reach his grandfather, a man who has little English. When a chance arises to help the older man find work, Francisco turns it into a lesson, teaching him the ins and outs of gardening. As they spend time together among the plants, the two come to know each other in ways they had not before.

The story looks at how family members from different generations can find their way to one another, and at how shared work can open up a relationship that language alone might not bridge. Its warm, simple tone suits young listeners and readers.
