About This Book
Reba Hore made this journal while recovering from surgery. It began in a humble dhobi khata, a ledger meant for listing the clothes given to the washerman. Over a few weeks its blank pages filled with drawings and poems that are tender, restless and spare, made from close contact with pain, memory, labour, age and everyday life. Hore looks at the world with a rare, unsentimental steadiness. Her subjects include a child's hunger, a mother at dusk, a tendril, a goat's sudden leap, the ache of the body and the pull to keep walking. Her lines shift between fragility and resolve, and between inner weather and the life around her. The book gathers 147 original pages by an artist for whom compassion, creativity and human effort were never abstractions. For her they were a continuous practice of seeing, feeling and making.
