About a Boy
About This Book
Will Freeman is a man of leisure in London who has never held a proper job and has no wish to. His comfortable income and his carefully managed shallowness leave him with a great deal of free time, and he has come up with a theory about how to spend it. Single mothers, he reasons, are attractive, capable, and often available, and a woman who has been left on her own might be more open to someone like him than other women would be. The only obstacle is that Will has no children. That does not stop him from joining SPAT, a support group for single parents, and inventing a two-year-old son named Ned to get through the door. Making things up is nothing new to him, and for a while the scheme works better than he had any right to expect. Then Will meets Marcus, a twelve-year-old who is awkward, odd, and far more perceptive than his age suggests. Marcus is not part of the plan, and he is not easily shaken off. As the two form an unlikely connection, Will's well-ordered and self-satisfied existence starts to be disrupted in ways he never anticipated. This is a funny, sharp-eyed novel about immaturity, loneliness, and the odd people who end up changing us. It is by the author of High Fidelity.
