About this book
Seventeen years after the Third Reich collapsed, Max Weill still cannot shake his memories of Auschwitz or the face of Dr. Otto Schramm. Schramm was the camp physician who carried out grim experiments alongside Mengele and sent Max's family to the gas chambers. Like many senior Nazi officers, Schramm slipped away to South America after the war, where Argentina under Juan Perón offered refuge and fresh identities.
Now near the end of his life, Max asks his nephew Aaron Wiley, a desk analyst for the CIA, to finish what he could not: find Otto in Argentina, seize him, and return him to Germany for trial. Aaron cannot refuse his uncle, so he travels to Buenos Aires, a city where former Nazis live openly among the Argentine elite. He befriends Otto's guarded, troubled daughter, convinced she is concealing her father's whereabouts, and recruits a German newspaper reporter, an Israeli agent, and the CIA station chief to help him search.
Otto proves more complicated than a simple villain, but he remains dangerous and will kill if cornered. With no clear sense of who is an ally and who is an enemy, Aaron must determine how far he is willing to go to see justice done. This is the author of Leaving Berlin.
