About this book
Advanced Electrical Drives presents a distinctive method for deriving model-based torque controllers for all types of Lorentz force machines, namely DC, synchronous and induction machines. The generalized modeling of rotating field machines rests on the rotating transformer model, which leads to universal field-oriented control algorithms. For switched reluctance machines the book takes a different route and develops direct torque control algorithms based on observer methods.
Each chapter ends with tutorials, and readers are encouraged to work through them to get a feel for how drive systems behave dynamically. This updated edition uses PLECS simulation and vector processing tools chosen specifically for these hands-on exercises. The book therefore promotes learning by doing, and experienced drive specialists may also find the simulation tools useful for designing high-performance torque controllers.
The book stands as a reference on its own. It is also part of a set with the companion texts Fundamentals of Electrical Drives and Applied Control of Electrical Drives. Together the three take readers from the basics of how electrical drives work, through advanced features and models, to applying the concepts on real hardware.
