About this book
No earlier book has tried to document surf culture across the whole of Africa, and AFROSURF sets out to do that. The volume was assembled by Mami Wata, a surf company based in Cape Town, with input from its co-founder Selema Masekela and a group of photographers, writers, thinkers and surfers from the continent. Together they examine life around the coasts of eighteen countries, stretching from Morocco to Somalia and across to Mozambique, South Africa and beyond.
The book gathers more than fifty pieces in many forms: essays, profiles of surfers and skateboarders, reflective pieces, poetry, photographs, illustrations, recipes, ephemera and a short comic. The design is meant to mirror the variety of Africa's landscapes and people.
Mami Wata's own practice follows the same values. The company sources and makes its products within Africa and works with local communities to build up regional economies through surf tourism. All proceeds from the book go to two surf therapy organizations on the continent, Waves for Change and Surfers Not Street Children.
