After The Fall
About This Book
Humans must be silent. Humans must be obedient. Humans must be good. John has tried to live by these rules all his life. The world he lives in is one hundred and twenty years past The Fall, and a century has gone by since the grays arrived to gather the last survivors of humanity from the ruins. John is bonded to Martok Barden, born Black Hand, one of the "good" grays. Martok is broke, homeless and borderline manic, but he has always treated John like a real person and sometimes like a friend, which is more than most humans get. Then Martok offers John's bond as collateral for a loan, to secure an abandoned house in the woods that he hopes to turn into a wilderness retreat for wealthy grays. John discovers that Martok's friendship has limits. Soon he is stuck between three problems: an underworld boss who takes Martok for someone he is definitely not, a girl raised by feral humans who despises pets like John, and Martok himself, whose delusions of grandeur appear to be catching up with him. On top of that, something in the woods has been killing people. John has sixty days before the loan comes due. In that time he has to work out how humans ended up on the wrong end of the domestication stick, and find a way to make Martok's half-baked scheme profitable enough to buy back his own life. He must also avoid being butchered by feral humans or having his head crushed by an angry gray.
