About this book
Afterglow is a set of futuristic short stories about how storytelling can help shape the world we need. Its authors come from many different backgrounds, and each one imagines a climate future that looks very different from our own.
The book was produced with Grist, a nonprofit media organization that reports on climate solutions. The collection draws on movements in speculative writing such as Afrofuturism, hopepunk, and solarpunk, and its settings are intersectional worlds in which every person is included. In these futures, societies put fair climate solutions first and care for their communities, whether they achieve this through abundance, adaptation, reform, or a new understanding of how people survive together.
The stories offer small signs of hope and even joy, and they are meant to show how fiction can serve as a launching point for imagining a better reality. The collection brings new voices into the climate conversation and looks ahead to the next 180 years of fair climate progress.
Rooted in the crisis of the present, the book offers a fresh way to think about the climate emergency, charting a route toward a future that is cleaner, greener, and more just.
