About this book
Albert Frey: Inventive Modernist is a comprehensive study of the Swiss-American architect Albert Frey (1903-1998). It traces his career from his early years in Paris working with Le Corbusier to his emergence as the defining architect of Palm Springs. His style of Desert Modernism, which he described as 'simple but severe', made him one of the most influential architects in California, the United States, and beyond.
The authors had full access to Frey's archives, and the book presents many rare and previously unexhibited architectural models, drawings, films, photographs, and pieces of furniture. It serves as a visual guide that goes well beyond documenting completed buildings.
New academic research and in-depth essays place Frey's work in context, and a detailed, illustrated list of his projects from 1925 to 1997 supports the case for his relevance today and his standing as a twentieth-century master. The volume was published to coincide with a major exhibition at the Palm Springs Art Museum.
