About this book
Michael Wolff, who wrote Fire and Fury, turns to the 2024 presidential race, a campaign with multiple criminal trials, two assassination attempts, and an abrupt change in who Donald Trump was running against. Wolff follows Trump from the start of his bid to his return to office, drawing on personal access to the people around him.
The book sets two opposite pictures side by side. In one, Trump is buried in legal trouble that could plausibly finish him. In the other, his party is overwhelmingly behind him, his polling keeps climbing, and the opposition is weak. Wolff shows how Trump dismisses rivals, lashes out at the prosecutors and judges pursuing him, and ridicules anyone who stands in his path, the sitting president included. Both camps came to see the race as possibly the last election, with the establishment either bringing Trump down or being brought down by him.
Wolff takes readers behind the scenes of Trumpworld and its improbable cast of key players, and gives a close look at the candidate himself. He presents Trump as arguably the most successful figure in American politics since Roosevelt, yet one whose conduct can look unhinged and heedless of consequences, as if it defies the logic of civic life. The book moves between tragedy and farce while asking what is at stake for democracy and the liberal ideal.
The result is an account of one of the most striking comebacks in American political history, and of the turmoil and discord in American life under Trump.
