Already Dead
About This Book
Already Dead is a contemporary noir set in northern California, told through the tangled story of Nelson Fairchild Jr. He is the disenfranchised heir to a family land fortune and a man who has botched nearly every scheme he has tried. His hopes now rest on a potentially profitable marijuana patch hidden among the old-growth redwoods on the family property.
Nelson's troubles are serious. His marriage has collapsed, and the divorce could cost him his land, his cash and his crop. Needing money fast, he foolishly agreed to smuggle $90,000 worth of cocaine through customs for Harry Lally, a major figure in a drug syndicate. He lost his nerve before bringing the drugs across and flushed them away. Now Lally wants him dead, and two thugs are closing in. Frightened and alone, Nelson may be left with only one way out.
The novel weaves together overlapping, entwined stories and returns to the themes that run through the work of Denis Johnson, author of Jesus' Son and Tree of Smoke: fate, redemption and the fraying of the fabric of contemporary society. The source describes it as his largest and most complex book up to that point.
