About this book
American't arrives at a moment when Black life in the United States feels especially precarious. The novel takes the view that, in this country, simply waking up Black can be treated as a criminal offense. Its aim is to move readers in several directions at once, drawing out laughter, tears, anger, and sustained reflection.
The story follows six Black men as they navigate the demands of corporate America while also living through love, friendship, and religious faith. Their individual struggles offer a close look at how Black men find their way through workplaces, relationships, and belief, and at the question of why the nation seems unable to extend its love to Black people.
The novel poses a central question: are Black Americans full citizens of a country that celebrates its flag, its constitution, its Bill of Rights, and the Emancipation Proclamation, or are they treated as subhuman, placed at the bottom of a caste system and still, in effect, enslaved? The narrative is presented as their story, and readers are invited to weigh the evidence and reach their own conclusion.
