About this book
Amish Generations gathers four lighthearted Amish love stories, each centered on a couple from a different stage of life. The collection's point is that romance can find people at any age.
In the first story, Fern was diagnosed with a chronic illness in her early twenties and decided it would make her a poor fit for Amish married life. She stopped thinking about dating, especially since Dan, the man she cares for, was in a serious relationship. Now Dan is single and seems to be noticing her, but Fern will need real courage to face the fear her illness has caused if she wants to chase her dreams.
The second story follows Jemima and Everett. When Everett left home ten years ago, her feelings for him soured into hatred. Then both of them return to the same bus station on the same day, and they find that old flames do not go out so easily. They must decide whether they can get past what separated them or whether some hurts run too deep. The third story brings together Benjamin and Lora Beth, who each lost a spouse early in their marriages. They begin writing letters, trading recipes and commiserating while their grown children fuss over them, even though the two are only in their forties. Their friendship deepens, and they wonder whether it could become something more, and how anyone learns to love again after a great love.
The last story centers on Jerald, a lifelong bachelor of seventy who loves good Amish cooking and enjoys teasing Regina, the wife of his best friend. He has always said he would marry once he met the right woman, and until now that has never happened. Then he tastes an exceptional blueberry pie and discovers that it was made by Elva, Regina's best friend.
