About this book
Hazel Sinnett cares more about the operating theatre than about the prospect of marrying. Her studies come to a halt when the renowned surgeon Dr. Beecham removes her from his lectures simply because she is a woman. He does offer a bargain: if she passes the medical examination without formal instruction, she may keep practising medicine. Lacking lessons, she needs bodies to study, and that is where Jack Currer comes in.
Jack earns his living by stealing corpses from graves, and in a city where death comes easily, he is struggling to stay alive. He and Hazel first cross paths by chance outside the Anatomist's Society. Hazel barely gives the meeting a second thought at the time, but she soon realises that this unlikely acquaintance could be far more useful than she imagined.
Jack has troubles of his own. Strangers have been lurking around cemeteries, people he knows are vanishing from the streets, and Roman Fever, which killed thousands only a few years earlier, has returned with renewed force. Those with influence show no concern until Hazel becomes involved.
Hazel and Jack must now join forces to expose the hidden truths lying beneath unmarked graves and at the centre of Edinburgh's high society.
