Ancient Canada

Being born with a special gift can bring a person enemies that last a lifetime. Lavender and her older sister Marigold are banished from the land they call home and must travel across a mythic version of Canada. Lavender can perceive whether living things are alive or dead, a talent that helps the pair cling to survival in an alternate Arctic Circle where the margins for error are slim.

The story passes between narrators, some human and some not. Among them are a stone giant, a massive bird-warrior, a fugitive from the bogs, a spoiled prince, and the assassins dispatched to track the sisters. Each voice adds its own thread to the sisters' journey, so the reader sees the world from many sides.

The novel draws on older literary traditions while presenting its myths from a contemporary angle, making it a fantasy for readers who enjoy inventive, multi-voiced adventures.
