About this book
The television work of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson ran from The Adventures of Twizzle (1957) to Thunderbirds Are Go (2015). Both are now gone, but their series and ideas continue to surface in updated versions of familiar favourites and in new concepts inspired by them.
Critic and essayist Fred McNamara examines different parts of the Andersons' output, weighing the strengths of each and placing them alongside comparable shows and concepts from elsewhere. The essays begin with Fireball XL-5 (1962) and Stingray (1964), then move through Thunderbirds (1965), Captain Scarlet (1967), UFO (1970) and the live-action 1999 (1975), before reaching the recent reinventions of the classic series. Throughout, McNamara looks closely at the settings, cities, machinery, characters, vehicles and recurring themes of these worlds.
The book includes a foreword by UFO actress Ayshea Brough. It is an unauthorised and unofficial collection of essays on the fictional worlds that Gerry and Sylvia Anderson created, written for readers with an interest in science fiction.
