Another Republic

First released in 1976, this poetry anthology was compiled by Charles Simic and Mark Strand, both of whom have held the post of United States Poet Laureate. The editors gathered work in translation, bringing together poets whose writing was largely unfamiliar to English-language readers at the time.

The selections come from European and South American authors. Though they were not yet widely read in English, these poets were already shaping the generation of writers working in their own day.
