Anyone's Ghost
About This Book
Anyone's Ghost is a debut novel by August Thompson about two young men and the love that begins between them in one teenage summer and stays with them for years. The book opens with its own premise: it took three car crashes to kill Jake. Theron David Alden is present for the first two. The first comes in rural New Hampshire, where fifteen-year-old Theron, an anxious boy, meets Jake, who is seventeen and seems to be good at everything without trying. The second comes six years later in New York City, during a handful of ecstatic, painful nights that are too short and that change both their lives. Those nights hold the end of the dream, the longing for it, and the dream itself, all at once. Theron is not there for the third crash. The novel moves between the joy of the friendship, including the plain, silly pleasure of a boyhood joke, and the damage done by insecurity. It looks at how a great song can seem to hold a whole universe and at how little one person can know of another. It also dwells on the blurry, hard-to-pin-down boundary between yourself and someone you love more than you love yourself, and on the heady, poisonous mix of need, hope and desire.
