Apostoloff
About This Book
Two sisters travel to Sofia to bury their father, whom neither of them loved very much. They go in a convoy of luxury limousines arranged by another Bulgarian exile, and they are driven by the ever-charming Ruben Apostoloff. One sister sits in the back and the other beside the driver. One is sharp-tongued and aggressive, the other polite and considerate. Apostoloff acts as their tour guide, and he speaks in a caustic voice. He presents the treasures of the country he loves: peacock-eye pottery coloured with a poisonous dye, a Black Sea coast that has been utterly ruined, and architecture he regards as a crime of the twentieth century. He works hard to win the sisters over, but his efforts look doomed. Their Bulgarian heritage weighs heavily on them. Their father was a successful doctor and a melancholy immigrant, and he still turns up in their dreams dragging the rope with which he hanged himself. The novel is a daughter's bitterly funny reckoning with her father and his homeland. It is full of linguistic wit and black humour, and it brings the distinctive voice of Sibylle Lewitscharoff to a new readership.
