About this book
Spanning about twenty-five years, this book gathers more than one hundred sculptures by Jud Turner. He builds his work largely from salvaged and reused objects, and his pieces have been exhibited and collected internationally. Turner has won awards, is represented by Woolff Gallery in London, and has created many permanent public installations across the United States.
Scrap and discarded materials sit at the center of his practice, which he shapes into large-scale constructions. The book is organized by theme rather than chronology. "Animalia" draws on the animal kingdom, "Industria" explores imagined industrial landscapes, and "Mechanica" focuses on machine and engine parts. "Naturalis" turns to the natural world.
"Publica" presents the works that have a permanent home in public spaces. The final section, "Mortalio", takes up mortality and the old tradition of memento mori.
Beyond the sculptures, the volume includes essays on how Turner works and what life in his studio is like, along with an excerpt from a 2018 interview with Eugene Magazine, taken from a longer feature.
