About this book
This textbook was prepared for today's automotive technicians. Its chapters follow the content areas tested by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). Each chapter opens with objectives that map to ASE material certification, and the lab worksheets line up with the NATEF Task List. Terminology follows the SAE J-1930 standard.
The book covers the full path of engine performance work. It starts with engine operation, parts, and specifications, then moves through diagnosing engine condition, cooling and lubrication systems, and the digital meters and oscilloscopes used to test them. Later sections address starting and charging, ignition components and service, computer fundamentals and sensors, and engine fuels and combustion. The final chapters examine carburetors, electronic fuel injection, emission control devices, On-Board Diagnostics II, and overall engine performance testing.
