About this book
Josey Angel fought for the Union as a sharpshooter and came home alive, but the peace that follows may be the more dangerous fight. It is 1868, two years of brutal combat have ended, and the army intends to give up the Bozeman Trail. Then a string of unsettling raids begins. The victims are beheaded, sometimes while still alive, and the fragile talks with the tribes are placed in jeopardy.
Josey and his wife, Annabelle, who is both sharp-minded and striking, set out to face Crazy Horse. Crazy Horse once abducted Annabelle and later led an attack that killed eighty-one soldiers at Fort Phil Kearny. Their path also crosses a gunman who holds Josey responsible for the deaths of his son and father, and a scientist whose unconventional ideas about human origins are unsettling. The scientist keeps a huge henchman and a force of mercenaries at his command.
These threads converge in a violent, fiery finale, where Josey and Annabelle must rely on more than their fast-firing rifles to untangle the mysteries. The characters are richly drawn, and the prose evokes the look and feel of the American West in its time.
The result is a fast-paced historical thriller that keeps readers turning pages.
