About this book
For ages, whoever sat on the Basilisk Throne held dominion over every continent, and humanity was enslaved under that rule. After long wars, the three human empires of Ophion, Velesa and Modjal have driven the Drehhu back to their heartland and joined forces for one enormous final offensive meant to end them. Earlier attempts collapsed under the Drehhu's hellish arsenal and dark sorcery, and the Throne itself has never fallen.
Alastor Nevelon and his son Crespin command a merchant fleet that supports the human armies, and they sail into battle carrying weapons of their own. The Drehhu are not the only ones willing to deceive or to reach for power. Alastor suspects betrayal within the empire he serves, so he sends his daughter Chrysanthe to the capital, Ophion Magne, as a "token" of his loyalty. He does this willingly. He tasks her with using her sharp intellect to uncover whatever schemes are forming at the empire's heart, and she accepts, aware that the polished manners of the court conceal murderous intent.
As rival nations collide and open conflict erupts, the path to defeating the Drehhu may run through a remote mountain stronghold. Along the way, the story follows a lawless wanderer called Hound and Ammolite, a young slave bound to a sorcerer older than any nation, whose loyalties remain a mystery.
