Battleground
About This Book
The Middle East is in turmoil, and the war in Gaza has sent fresh shocks through the whole region. A little over a decade ago, the Arab Spring seemed to promise a fresh start. What followed instead was a run of civil wars, coups and even more repressive forms of authoritarian rule. Regional and global powers made things worse by intervening to advance their own interests, while the United States, long the region's dominant outside power, pulled back and left a vacuum that others rushed to fill.
In Battleground, Christopher Phillips examines the geopolitical rivalries that now shape the region, along with the major outside powers competing for influence there: Russia, China, the European Union and the United States. He organizes the book around ten key flashpoints, ranging from Syria to Palestine.
Phillips argues that the United States overextended itself after the Cold War and then retreated in the 2010s, and that this swing has thrown the region off balance. The Middle East today is marked by conflicts of unprecedented violence and by a scramble for power in the post-American era, and its future remains uncertain.
