Bedanabala
About This Book
Bedanabala is told in the first person by a woman whose mother was rescued from a brothel. Her reminiscences build a history that is seldom recorded, one that runs alongside the official story of India's modernity and nationalism: the history of women cast out because they are considered fallen. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, Bedanabala's voice speaks for the many women who, for various reasons, ended up outside the protection of the domestic sphere. In a society where women worked only as domestic servants, they made their lives in the few ways left to them, entertaining men and forming liaisons. Their dreams and passions became bound up with the fate of a country that was fighting for independence and challenging oppressive old customs. Written in 1996, the novel sets out to feel for a part of society that even other women condemned as beyond decency and acceptance.
