Beggar’s Feast
About This Book
Sam Kandy is born into poor prospects in a Ceylon village in 1899. He dies a hundred years later as the wealthy headman of that same village, a self-made shipping magnate and father of sixteen who has been married three times and widowed twice. The novel follows his life in four parts. As a boy, he is abandoned at the gates of a distant temple by parents who believe his horoscope marks him as a blight on the family. He escapes the temple and makes a daring journey across Ceylon to Australia and Singapore. Eventually, he returns to the village he once called home, determined to win recognition for his success at any cost. Beggar's Feast is a story of family, pride and ambition, set on a beautiful and troubled island caught between tradition and modernity. It is the work of Randy Boyagoda.
