Belarus
About This Book
Belarus is a mid-sized country with a recorded past of more than a thousand years, yet outside the occasional news story it remains little understood. Existing academic and general works tend to cover only pieces of its long history and of the political, social and cultural questions it faces today. This book presents a different picture. It contrasts Belarusian history with the histories and myths produced by Russian scholars and widely circulated abroad. The author argues that Belarus belongs to a Western-Ruthenian (Belarusian-Ukrainian) civilization, a sub-civilization of the West that differs from the Eurasian civilization. Tracing the country's development from the ninth century to the present, the book offers a detailed and critical reading of its past, then turns to recent findings on Belarusian society, including mentality, identity, religion, the current elites, and the 2020 Revolution of Hope. The final sections assess where Belarus may be heading by weighing modern trends in human societal and political development. They also analyze in depth what the national and ruling elites are doing and what ideologies guide them as they work toward building a nation-state.
