Bequest Chronicles
About This Book
The story takes place in the years after Waterloo, in a quiet corner of southwestern France. For more than six hundred years, the town of La Garenne has been the seat of the Ducs de Garenne and their ancestors, yet little has ever happened there, and even the French Revolution barely touched it. That calm ends when a local man, a national hero known to everyone in the town, dies under suspicious circumstances. His mentor, the Duc de Garenne, soon dies as well. Around the same time, the hunting hound Hugo Hound, once owned by both men, vanishes without explanation. Next, a patrol of gendarmes from La Garenne disappears, and the local commandant insists the men have simply vanished. A young officer sent from Paris to investigate discovers that the hound is the link between all these events. His orders are then changed by the Head of Gendarmerie in Paris, who tells him he must find Hugo Hound too. He soon finds himself responsible for protecting the dog and the companions travelling with him, who include talking bears and lions. Along the way he meets Catherine again, a woman he once helped rescue from the chaos following Waterloo. She and her cousin turn out to be far more involved in his task than he could have imagined. The journey across France leads toward the Pyrenees, once home to these extraordinary beings, and the travellers are hunted by an evil werewolf. This creature was once the leader of the missing patrol and is the rebellious son of the late Duc de Garenne, and therefore Catherine's brother.
