About this book
This monograph presents a body of work by Bev Grant, a Brooklyn-based photographer, folk singer, and filmmaker born in 1942. It is the first book devoted to her archive of photographs taken between 1968 and 1972, a period when she was active among feminist and political organizers and documented the movements from within.
Grant started making pictures while taking part in women's movement actions, among them the 1968 protest against the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City and the Jeannette Rankin Brigade gathering in Washington, DC, that same year. Her membership in the New York Newsreel film collective gave her entry to the Young Lords Party, the Black Panther Party, and the Poor People's Campaign, and her photographs record those circles.
The roots of her involvement go back to 1967, when she sat in on a workshop on women's liberation run by Students for a Democratic Society at Princeton University. She has described that session as a turning point that offered her a way to understand her own life and a direction she has kept pursuing.
