About this book
This volume records a gathering held in Munich from 27 to 30 July 1976 at the Max Planck Institut für Psychiatrie, organized as a NATO symposium. Participants from several countries came together to examine biofeedback, a technique for bringing visceral functions, central nervous system activity and skeletal muscle responses under deliberate control. The discussions covered both the underlying theory and practical applications across these fields.
The meeting drew on several sponsors. Its initial funding came from the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which ran a continuing series of scientific symposia, and a grant from the United States Office of Naval Research helped bring in participants from many countries. The Max Planck Institut für Psychiatrie provided the venue. Dr. B.A. Bayraktar of NATO and Dr. Donald Woodward of the Office of Naval Research are named for their advisory roles. The planning was carried out with Rolf Engel, Pola Engel-Sittenfeld, Laverne C. Johnson, George H. Lawrence, Gary E. Schwartz and David Shapiro.
