About this book
Black Soil is a novel set in the American South in the 1930s. Its heroine, Ella Mae Turner, is a strong-willed young woman who is determined to build a better life for herself and her family despite the obstacles in her way.
The story takes place in the fictional town of Cottondale, Georgia, where the Turners live and work on a small farm. They are a hardworking, close-knit family, but they are poor and struggle to get by. Ella Mae dreams of something more and is willing to leave her family behind to get it.
As the story unfolds, she meets racism, poverty and violence, and she learns what it means to live in a place where Black people are treated as second-class citizens and are often subjected to discrimination and brutality. She eventually leaves Cottondale to pursue her dreams. On the way she meets other characters who are also struggling to survive in an unfair world.
The novel explores race, class and identity in the American South, and it reflects on the lasting legacy of racism and discrimination in America. Its themes include resilience, courage and hope.
