Blood Work

Terrell McCaleb, a former FBI agent, has spent his retirement on a boat, slowly recovering from a heart transplant and trying to stay away from anything that might strain him. That quiet routine ends when Graciella Rivers comes aboard and describes how her sister Gloria was killed. Her account pulls McCaleb back into the work he left behind. Driven by the new heart beating in his chest, he sets out to hunt a predator who has no conscience. The killer's crime breaks every principle McCaleb learned during his years with the Bureau. With a second chance at life in hand, he has only one real opportunity to uncover the truth.

The novel is a crime thriller by Michael Connelly, who is also known for his Harry Bosch series. It is set in Los Angeles and built around a retired investigator who is no longer fit for the job, yet cannot walk away from a case that demands his attention.

The book was adapted into a 2002 film, Blood Work, directed by and starring Clint Eastwood.
