About this book
It is 1942, and the Second World War is well underway. Roberta Hollis, known as Bobby, has joined the Air Transport Auxiliary, a unit of women pilots nicknamed the glamour girls. These women fly just as skillfully as the men beside them, moving aircraft, spare parts and passengers between factories, assembly plants and airfields.
Bobby grew up on a family farm where she was overlooked by a quiet, distant father and a mother still wounded by past hardships. Longing to leave that life behind, she sees the ATA as a chance to pursue her own ambitions while doing her part for the war effort.
Her path is not an easy one. Her friend Harriet seems to draw trouble wherever she goes, and Bobby's domineering father has his heart set on marrying her off to a wealthy farmer from a nearby county. Long-buried family secrets also threaten to upend everything. As Bobby works her way through both her career and matters of the heart, she discovers that handling a heavy four-engined bomber may be the simpler challenge of the two.
