About this book
Emma Taylor is a widow in Nottingham, England, who urgently needs work to support herself and her daughter, Olivia. Legal restrictions keep widows with children out of most jobs, so her only real option is to persuade the manageress of Boots' Booklover's Library to give her a chance.
When war moves from threat to reality, Olivia is evacuated to the countryside. Separated from her daughter, Emma finds comfort in the friendships she builds with her neighbors and coworkers, and in recommending books to the library's quirky regular borrowers.
The work brings troubles of its own. Books are being misshelved and are disappearing without explanation, and the job stirs memories of her late father and the bookstore they once ran together before a terrible accident. As the Blitz grows heavier in Nottingham and Emma struggles to be reunited with Olivia, she has to lean on her community and on the power of books to find hope in dark times. It is a story of a mother and daughter in wartime England, and of the books that connect them.
