About this book
Win "Coal" Keegan has just arrived at his latest foster home, where the McKays are a big, noisy and slightly nosy family. They seem eager to welcome him, but Coal is wary of trusting anyone. So he keeps quiet about a lot. He does not mention that he went out for a walk with chalk in his pocket, planning to cover a nearby street with his art. He does not mention that a neighbor caught him drawing, pulled a gun and fired it, or that the police chased him afterward. And he definitely does not mention that, when it all went down, he somehow turned invisible.
Now he has to work out how it happened. Is he a superhero, a mutant, or a science experiment? Is that why he has no family of his own? As Coal hunts for answers and gradually learns to control his invisibility, he leans on the McKay kids and on friends old and new.
They soon find out they are not the only ones looking for a Black boy with superpowers. The situation turns out to be far stranger and more dangerous than any of them expected.
