Boyhood
About This Book
The setting is a busy Punjabi town in the years before Partition. The hero is a frail boy with far too much energy, who spends his days watching the neighbourhood children play and wishing he could join them. His mother, forever anxious about his health, keeps him close to home. When he isn't being scolded for swearing, he is squabbling with his brothers and sisters or getting needled by the household servant. As he grows and the world beyond the house draws him in, he starts to see things differently. His father turns out to be a man with limits. His scorn for girls fades away once he feels his first stirrings of desire. The scuffles of the playground, he learns, count for little beside the harder lessons life has waiting. Bhisham Sahni, one of the great names of Hindi literature, uses these scenes to show how painful and how full of longing childhood can be.
