Eleanor, Pip, and Otto got away from the sinister January Society and its leader on Halloween last year, but they are not safe yet. Under the bargain they struck with Mr. January, his sister now gets her turn to hunt the three friends, and she goes about it in far more treacherous ways. The town of Eden Eld stays eerily quiet while she works.

Then friends and neighbors start to vanish, snatched by strange monsters dripping with mud. Eleanor and her two best friends have to find out what their new enemy is hiding before the creatures come for their own families. With the mud beasts stalking them, they lean on their book of twisted fairytales, their wits, and their friendship to find a way out.

The stories they rely on turn out to have a stronger grip on them, and on their futures, than they ever guessed. Even if all three survive, none of them will come out the same.
