Bravey
About This Book
Bravey is a memoir by Alexi Pappas, a runner who made her Olympic debut in 2016, and who is also an artist. Her story begins in early childhood, when her mother died by suicide while Pappas was four. The loss changed the course of her life and started a long search for female role models. Her father signed her up for sports teams to keep his grieving daughter busy, and the women she met through athletics became some of the first she looked up to. She set herself a goal of becoming an Olympian. Through setbacks and hardship she kept to that dream, putting in demanding physical and mental work until she reached the Games. The book looks back on the key moments of her life and the lessons that shaped her career in sport and in the arts, above all how to be brave. Pappas writes with humor and warmth about everything from high school awkwardness to the depression that followed the Olympics. She treats the dark stretches as just as important to her growth as the breakthroughs, and she argues for embracing what hurts, physically and emotionally. For Pappas, bravery is inward-facing. It depends on how you feel about yourself and on believing in yourself as you run toward your goals. Her experiences show how a reader can get through hardship, make peace with pain, celebrate wins, value the loyalty of teammates and claim joy. In her words, that is how anyone can be a bravey.
