Ella Madson's house has just been blown up, and things get worse from there. FBI Agent Sam Donnelly, a bristly man, takes the case and insists that Ella help him find her estranged sister, Mal. He turns out not to be an insensitive jerk after all, just an agent weighed down by a tragic past, something Ella understands well. Before long, the thought that he will leave her life once the case closes no longer feels like a relief. There is little time to work out what they mean to each other, though. The team is closing in on Mal, and they must stop whoever is trying to kill Ella before it is too late.
