Brighter Choice
About This Book
Across the United States, wealthy white families are settling into neighborhoods that have long been home to Black residents, creating both a test and a chance for local public schools. Some newcomers steer clear of nearby schools, while others use their political influence to push out families who have lived in the area for years. This book follows a third path, one that could lead to fairer schooling. The story unfolds at Brighter Choice Community School, a public elementary school in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant, a neighborhood changing quickly through gentrification. Its mostly Black parents, led by PTA president Keesha Wright-Sheppard, are learning to share their school with white newcomers. Beyond the school gates, widespread homelessness and a pandemic that hit people of color hardest make it difficult for children to thrive. Inside, bruised feelings and miscommunication pull parents apart. Still, the parents work through their disagreements to build a community grounded in mutual trust and respect. In doing so, they sow early roots of interracial solidarity, aiming for stronger schools for every child. Whether those roots take hold depends on whether parents of every background, aware of past injustice and inequality, can join together to move beyond that history.
