Kick Keswick is an American woman in London, poised and composed, who has spent more than three decades working at Ballantine & Company, a respected auction house. Her world revolves around art and antiques: she knows paintings, furniture and decorative objects inside out. Kick has built a contented life without romance, keeping her private affairs to herself. She finds comfort in her cozy flat, her library, her music, good food and fine jewelry, and she has no interest in a man complicating things. That changes when Owen Brace, an American industrialist with a reputation as a charming rogue and philanderer, takes control of the struggling firm through a hostile takeover. He draws Kick into a love affair full of romance and sensual delight. Her instincts warn her that his intentions are not genuine, and as he moves closer to the life she guards so carefully, he discovers that underestimating her is a serious mistake. The story moves from London to the countryside of Provence, France, blending suspense, revenge and a web of secrets.
