Broken Prey

A young woman's body is discovered on a Minneapolis riverbank. Her throat has been cut, her skin bears the marks of a beating, and the killer has arranged her so she will be seen. Lucas Davenport reads the scene and decides this was no crime of passion or romance gone bad. The man responsible is driven by something misfiring inside his own head.

Three weeks later, a second body turns up in a farmhouse about six miles south. The wounds and the staging are the same, but this time the victim is a man. Nothing connects the two dead, and nothing suggests the killer has finished.
