Camilla

Camilla traces a young woman's passage into adulthood in the early decades of the twentieth century. Her path is shaped by matters of the heart and by the expectations of the society around her, and over the course of the story she comes to recognise her own capacity and self-reliance.

Alongside her personal journey, the novel looks closely at the place of women in that era, weighing the restricted roles available to them and the pressures they faced. Its underlying concern is the worth of remaining faithful to one's own nature.
