About this book
Wyoming was among the last states to see sustained settlement by people of non-Native descent. Campbell County, in the state's northeast corner, has no large body of water, so it was not a primary destination for those traveling west.
The county's first settlements followed the early Homestead Acts, under which the federal government offered free land claims to encourage people to homestead. A second local boom came in the 1970s, when dozens of commercial coal mines opened and began hiring workers.
