About this book
Capitol Murder launches a new series by award-winning author Judith Erwin, built around private investigator Jake Shepherd. Jake has little patience for pleasantries and does not work at winning people over, though he seems untroubled by that. Anyone caught in a tight spot, however, would do well to have him on their side. He is a former FBI agent with a Yale law degree, a cowboy with rugged looks, and a marksman who could hit a mosquito's wings from a hundred yards away. He reads suspects quickly, and women tend to notice him.
On the job, Jake rubs clients the wrong way, outmaneuvers suspects, and leans on an unusual working relationship with his former FBI supervisor. Whatever his methods, his aim is always justice.
The story begins when Jake crosses paths with Scarlett Kavanaugh, an Atlanta attorney and Harvard Law graduate who is estranged from her twin. When the husband of her twin, a U.S. senator, is found dead, Jake and Scarlett are drawn together. Scarlett is quick-witted, intelligent, and self-assured, and she proves a worthy match for Jake. As she assists his investigation, a charged, flirtatious attraction builds between them.
