Carbonation
About This Book
Carbonation is an investigative account of the people challenging the soda industry. Author Murray Carpenter, a journalist who covers that industry, argues that Coca-Cola, the most popular beverage in America and as familiar as apple pie or baseball, does not advertise the harmful health effects of high fructose corn syrup, one of its main ingredients. The book points out that two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese and names soda as a root cause. It contends that the company has clouded public understanding through front groups and Coke-funded research claiming that all calories are equal, which the book presents as an attempt to manipulate scientific consensus. Carpenter follows the scientists, doctors and health-minded advocates working to set the facts straight. He also covers the court cases brought against Coca-Cola by nonprofits such as the Praxis Project, an organization dedicated to health equity, and by two Washington, D.C., pastors fighting for the lives of their congregations. Written from an insider's perspective, it is a narrative exposé in the vein of Dopesick.
